There will no health cover for a new born baby, but now a days some companies are offering health insurance for a newborn from day one under the maternity cover as a benefit or additional cover.

By the birth of a child, the parents need to allocate finances for his milestones. They must consider buying a health insurance plan. This can help in medical expenses in case of an unforeseen event or a medical emergency.

It is not possible to take an individual health cover for a newborn baby, but the baby can be included or added to an existing family floater policy or group health insurance policy.

The baby who is just a few days old cannot be added to the health cover as the initial days are considered as risky. While the insurers typically allow the addition of the baby after 90 days, the threshold age may differ for companies.

Some companies are insuring a newborn from day one under the maternity and newborn cover as a benefit or additional cover.

The application for adding a child to the policy can be at the time of annual renewal in the form prescribed by the insurance company, along with neccessary documents. In case the insurer is ready to cover the baby from the first day, the company should be intimated within one week of the baby’s birth.

The necessary documents of birth, such as birth certificate copy, maternity discharge card, and reports in case of any medical condition suffered by the child at birth has to be provided. A photo may need to be provided for cashless card issued by the insurer.

The insurance company will recalculate the premium on the addition of a child to an existing policy. The revised premium amount has to be paid to the insurance company in order to renew the policy.

The medical cover offered to a newborn baby may differ for various companies. Some companies may cover vaccination charges, while others also cover congenital disorders.
